Air Source Heat Pumps
What are they?
Air Source Heat Pumps work by taking low grade energy from the outside air temperature and convert it to useful energy by means of the vapour compression cycle which is similar to the refrigeration system.
What’s the benefit?
Air source pumps can be fitted on the outside of a building or in a loft space. They generally perform better in slightly warmer temperatures as they work best with a higher difference in temperature between inside and outside temperatures. They can be used for ventilating a house or warming the fresh air that is pumped into your house, thus heating your house with minimal energy.
A typical system can cost between £7,000 – and £11,000 plus installation of the tubes used for distributing the air around the house. This will vary from home to home and the location of the property. On average you can save £400 - £800 on your heating bills and a saving of 2 – 8 tonne of C0₂ per year, depending on what fuel is being replaced in your home.
With increasing pressure from Building regulations regarding adequate ventilation and energy conservation, coupled with continued rise in fuel costs, saving heat whilst also insuring sufficient ventilation in your home is becoming vitally important.
How can Footprint Building help?
We sell air source heat pumps from our showroom. We can recommend, supply and install them as required. If you are considering one for your home then give us a call and we will be happy to come and do a free site viewing to discuss your individual requirements.
Answers to frequently asked questions:
1. Are they suitable for my home?
They are cheaper to install than Ground Source pumps, but the disadvantage is that in cold weather the temperature outside will be much lower when the heat is needed the most. The pump therefore has to work harder to supply the heat required.
2. Do I need planning permission?
Further legislation is expected later this year which is expected to result in air source heat pumps being permitted developments with-out planning permission. For now, the legislation stands that for you must consult with your local authority regarding planning permission.

3. Other considerations?
- Have you installed insulation measures?
- Wall, floor and loft insulation will retain the heat and therefore lower your heat demand and make the system more effective. We recommend that insulation is really important factor to consider before you install new heating systems.
4. Are there any grants available?
There are currently no grants available for air source pumps.
