Under Floor Heating

What are they?

Under floor heating is the most efficient way of adding heat to a room. It can be run at low temperatures to ensure a constant level of thermal comfort.

What’s the benefit?

The low temperatures that are required to run these systems mean that the boiler is running more efficiently, which will save money and green house gas emissions.

Under floor heating can also be plumbed into solar thermal heating systems if in place, which will mean that the heat is being generated straight from the roof of the house, and therefore will not use any extra energy to heat the system.

Please note that under floor heating can be expensive to run if it is mains electricity which is its primary fuel so we recommend using it with either Solar Thermal Heating or Photovoltaic cells to produce the energy or the heat to run the system, making the whole system carbon neutral and self sufficient.

Answers to frequently asked questions:

1. Are they suitable for my home?

There are a few things to consider before laying under floor heating:

• The floor has to be totally pulled up and then re-laid. So if you are considering a new floor then it may be more feasible.
• The refurbishment of the floor will also mean that the floor will have to be raised up from its original level to incorporate the heating system.
• The material that you use to finish your floor will have to be considered as it needs to be able to exchange heat and not absorb too much of the heat passing through it.

2. Do I need planning permission?

No. Under floor heating systems do not require any planning permission to install.
